There is a mysterious spiritual force whose timeless presence can be felt through the cold, salty northerly wind that greets the Pacific coast of Washington state. In harmony with the grand forests and coastlines of the Pacific Northwest it whispers stoically, knowing that it has resided here long before humans set foot on this land, and will continue to reign over its domain long after we are gone. Since my childhood, I have held a deep fascination and respect for this force, but it was in my time spent camping on Shi Shi Beach - the most northwestern point of the Olympic Peninsula - where I got the inspiration to compose this piece. The first movement takes us through the coastal rainforest through dark overgrown paths, mingling with mysterious forest entities. The second movement opens onto the serene gray mist of the beach, taking us through gentle waves up into the spiraling salty air.
